Bora

36 plates Large-format film Shown at Lantern Quay Gallery, 2025

The bora is a cold north-easterly that pours off the plateau in sudden gusts and reshapes the coast in an afternoon. Over four winters I walked the karst ridges and the shoreline below them, recording what it leaves behind: polished rock, flattened grass and whitecaps out to the horizon.

Salt is still harvested by hand along the Adriatic and beyond. This long project follows the salt pans from the Slovenian coast to the shores of North Africa, recording the families who tend them and the patient geometry of the pans.

Practice

Slow looks at quiet places

I work slowly and return often.

Each project has grown over several seasons, and almost everything I shoot is within a day's drive of the studio.

I studied earth sciences before I picked up a camera, which may be why rock, ridgelines and tide lines keep turning up in the frame. I shoot large-format film for the long projects and a small digital kit for assignments, and I make every print myself in a small darkroom behind the studio.

Assignments are mostly editorial and documentary: magazine reportage, long-form features for charities, now and then, a portrait of someone absorbed in their craft. I do not photograph weddings or product work.

Editions

Each print is made by hand on archival cotton-rag paper, then signed and numbered on the back. Once an edition sells out it is closed and never reprinted.

Commissions

Editorial and documentary assignments are scheduled around the projects and are normally booked two to three months ahead. My day rate starts at $750 plus expenses; museums, charities and community projects receive a reduced fee. Multi-day assignments are quoted per project. Describe the story and where it takes place, and I'll let you know soon if it fits my approach.
