The Salt Road

Following working salt pans from the Slovenian coast to North Africa: the families, the tools and the patient geometry.

I photograph the pans in season, returning to the same six locations along both shores of the Adriatic and further south. The pictures here are a selection from the ongoing work; the full sequence will gather in a book now taking shape.

The work is seasonal and the windows are short: the first cut, the high-summer harvest, the draining of the pans in autumn. I return to the same six locations every year, and the book — now in progress — will gather the best of the seasons so far.

On the pans

Permission first, pictures second

The pans are workplaces, not backdrops. Every family in the series was asked first, paid for their time when the day allowed it, and shown the pictures before anything was printed or published.

I shoot digital on the pans — the brine and the glare are unkind to film — and the harvest prints are the most requested in the shop. Collectors choosing the portfolio box most often build it from this series; write if you want help choosing twelve that hang together.
